The last time Texas (9-1, 7-3 ATS) went on the road, the outcome was unpleasant. They will try to turn that around against another high-scoring Big 12 foe. The Longhorns did not show any disappoint from losing to Texas Tech with a solid 45-21 effort over Baylor at home. Colt McCoy got back on track and the offensive line reasserted itself after being outplayed in Lubbock. Coach Mack Brown’s team still has something to play for with Big 12 South members having head-to-head hookups in the next few weeks. The road favorite role has not been a key part of Longhorns arsenal, with 20-21-2 ATS record under coach Brown. Hopefully for Horns backers, the team learned about bringing the intensity, since ultimately that is what has deprived them of perfect season.
Kansas (6-4, 5-4 ATS) returns home after another rough and tumble affair at Nebraska, losing by 10 points. QB Todd Reesing has been kept the Jayhawks afloat all season, with this squad not as talented as last year’s and facing a more challenging schedule. When running back Jake Sharp has running lanes to run thru, it does open up more options in the Mark Mangino playbook. In a league stuffed with teams capable of scoring big numbers, it’s hard to point to exactly how much the Jayhawks defense has regressed, other than realizing it is not a stout as last year’s crew. Playing two new cornerbacks is not the sign of advancement, especially having to face the Texas offense. Kansas has been a stellar at home the last couple of years under Mangino, with a 9-2 ATS mark at Memorial Stadium.
These teams haven’t met since the 2005 season when then number two Texas crushed Kansas 66-14. The year prior in Lawrence, the “Manginos” gave the Longhorns all they could handle, losing 27-23 as 22-pointing underdogs. Kansas is 2-6 all-time versus Texas and hasn’t beaten them since Franklin D. Roosevelt was president (1938). They are 0-6 and 1-5 ATS since that time, but can take solace in being 6-1 ATS in home finales since 2001.
